As kids we're taught not to slurp. It's noisy, impolite, and simply a display of bad manners right? We'll it turns out that if you're drinking coffee and want to do it right, slurping is actually what you want to do. In this article, we'll explain why you should slurp your coffee instead of sip it.
It all comes down to our physiology.
When you sip on something, the flavor often registers at the tip of the tongue. Afterwards, it's quickly gulped down the throat. But how much of the flavor did you really experience doing it this way?
To truly savor the flavor of your coffee in full, it needs to hit your entire palette (and preferably at once). This will simultaneously activate all of your taste senses and give you the ability to discern different flavors with much more accuracy.
The average human has over 10,000 taste buds. When you think about it, only a small portion of them are awakened when I sip my coffee. Slurping causes the coffee to “splash” onto most if not all of my taste buds thus giving me a completely different cup of coffee.
Speaking of taste, did you that you can taste with your nose?
It's true. That's because there are passageways that connect your mouth to your nose. Inhaling air with your coffee allows your taste buds to pick up a broader and deeper range of smells and tastes. Additionally, as food is chewed, it releases chemicals that travel these passageways and activate olfactory senses in the nose.
When you slurp your coffee it's like going from regular TV clarity to 4k Ultra HD clarity. Or at least that's what it feels like for my taste buds.

Take Your Time Slurping Your Coffee
Many of us don't slurp on a daily basis so I would recommend starting slow. You don't want the coffee to go down the wrong pipe as they say. A love of coffee doesn't mean you want to be choked by it.
Start by allowing a little air to come in as you open your mouth to drink the coffee. Gradually allow more and more air in with each slurp. The more you inhale, the louder the slurp will be. Before long, you'll be slurping with the best of them.
Professional Coffee Reviewers Slurp Their Coffee
Did you know that professional coffee reviewers will all slurp their coffee? This is because they already know that in order to fully appreciate a coffee's flavor and aroma, it cannot be sipped. Slurping is called for.
This method enables coffee reviewers to appreciate all of the nuanced flavors of the coffee in a deeper and more vibrant way.
While slurping your coffee may deliver the tastiest experience, it's not always practical to do. If you're in public and making a slurping noise wouldn't be well-received by others, then sipping is probably a better idea. After all, there was a reason we weren't allowed to slurp growing up.
But if you're with friends or at home, then by all means slurp until the cows come home.
It may sound dramatic but once you visit Slurp-topia you may never go back to Sip-ville. So next time your enjoying your favorite brew, make it even better to doing it like the pros and slurping.
