Single Origin coffee, as opposed to blends, are coffee beans sourced from a literal “single origin” or “single location”. This can include a single coffee-growing region, farm, farmer, or producer.
Single Origin coffee is usually favored by coffee connoisseurs over blends because they deliver a more uniform and consistent taste. Coffee blends, as the designation suggests, includes a mix of different types of beans often varying in quality and flavors. The results can end up being a “mixed bag” (no pun intended).
If you’re looking to get the full and complete flavor profile of a specific bean from a specific region, then single origin coffee is most certainly the way to go. There’s nothing like enjoying the pristine and authentic taste of beans from renown coffee regions like Yirgacheffe and the Kona mountain range. It’s much easier to discern a bean’s natural flavor profile with single origin beans. Unlike blends which source beans from many different places, single origin coffee will offer the most unaltered coffee experience possible.
Another notable difference between single origin coffees and blends is that single origin coffees are seasonal and thus only available at certain times during the year. Single origin coffee has limited availability because each type of coffee bean has a different window during which they offer peak flavor.
One of our favorite single origin coffees comes from Fabula Coffee which incidentally is also organic, mold-free, low acid and a grand example of single origin beans should taste. They source their beans from Peru, Papua New Guinea, Nicaragua, Jinotega.
Note: The world’s most exotic coffees are typically single origin.
