Nespresso is one of the top selling coffee brewers today and has literally set the gold standard for single serve coffee preparation. Their streamlined system is visually appealing and it makes delicious beverages that have won the hearts of millions coffee drinkers around the world. While Nespresso maintains a firm hold on the coffee capsule market, there have been a number of new challengers that have entered to the arena. One such company is Gourmesso that offers a variety of gourmet flavors coffee pods that are compatible with the Nespresso brewing system. But how do Gourmesso capsules stand up to the genuine Nespresso article and how comparable of an alternative are they? Check out our comprehensive Gourmesso review below to find out.
No Gourmesso review would be complete without a categorical breakdown of its benefits and drawbacks when compared to industry standards set by Nespresso.
Gourmesso Quality Comparison
Please note that a measurement of coffee quality is very different from a measurement of coffee strength. Gourmesso coffee is highly refined and regardless of the chosen blend, you can really taste the complexity of high and low notes in each of their capsules. That's one of the many gauges we use in determining the quality level of a coffee blend. In this sense, Gourmesso more than holds its own to Nespresso capsules. A USDA organic certified coffee capsule has been long overdue for Nespresso. Fortunately, Gourmesso meets this need directly by offering fair trade and organic Nespresso-compatible capsules. Arabica and Robusta beans, as well as blends from Africa, India, and South America are available.
Cost is a major reason why many people originally switch to home brewing. Yet, while you do save money over time compared to a daily coffeehouse habit, the cost of pods and relevant equipment can leave a gaping hole in your budget for a while. One way to counteract that is to buy pods that are compatible with your system but don't carry the same trendy company name. Nespresso capsules for the original line machines will cost you around 75 to 90 cents per cup of caffeinated goodness, while Gourmesso capsules run average right around 50 cents each. That's a savings of at least 30% making making Gourmesso capsules significantly more cost-effective.
Strength and Smoothness
Coffee drinkers know full well that aroma is just as important as taste. It's an inseparable part of the full coffee experience. When we sat down to write this Gourmesso review, it was impossible not to recall how aromatic the coffee smelled. Unlike so many other pod varieties, Gourmesso's odor is strong enough to get your attention right out of the package.
The scent of freshly ground blends fill the air with a distinctly attractive and bold aroma serving as a sign of good things to come. It's an impressive scent to say the least. Two size varieties offer the consumer a choice in regular (65 mg caffeine) or larger lungo (70 mg caffeine) capsules. However, once brewed, Gourmesso capsules are noticeably weaker than Nespresso's varieties. There's a good reason for this as Gourmesso's lungo varieties contain around 8 mg less caffeine than Nespresso's. If you prefer a stronger brew, we suggest brewing regular size cups for lungo capsules or adjust the water or milk levels to your personal taste. The strength of Gourmesso pods can be a major point of contention when comparing the two brands. Some think Gourmesso is too weak in flavor while there are still others that think Nespresso is too strong. It's worth noting that just because Nespresso is stronger doesn't mean we consider it better. Preference for coffee strength varies a great deal from one coffee drinker to the next, and to conclude a stronger coffee as being better wouldn't be fair.
This difference in strength between Gourmesso and Nespresso capsules is worth noting ahead of time so you won't be surprised when you take your first sip.
When it comes to selection, Gourmesso slightly edges out Nespresso. At the time of this writing, Gourmesso offered 25 different varieties of gourmet coffee blends compared to Nespresso's 19. Gourmesso's product range includes ten different espresso varieties, a decaf espresso, six flavored espresso blends, and three lungo options.
Gourmesso pods are compatible with the original line of Nespresso brewing machines and not their Vertuoline machines. These pods are also compatible with the Inissia machine.
As the European leader in Nespresso compatible coffee capsules, Gourmesso has firmly established itself as an uncompromising provider of quality espresso pods. Needless to say, Gourmesso has earned itself a strong reputation over the years and there's a reason they've been able to take some earn its share of the espresso pod pie. Those looking for deep espresso options need look no further as Gourmesso offers the widest selection of espresso blends and flavors in the United States.
When it comes down to it, Gourmesso capsules offer the style, freshness, and selection of Nespresso varieties at a fraction of the cost. No one in their right minds will doubt the high quality of Nespresso products. However, if you're looking to add some more variety to your coffee capsule experience, you really can't go wrong with Gourmesso. While we haven't had any direct interactions with their customer service, we've also heard many positive things regarding their staunch commitment to customer satisfaction. At the end of the day, the choice is yours. But if you love Nespresso, Gourmesso is definitely worth a shot (no pun intended.) If you've had the pleasure of trying Gourmesso pods and would like to leave a Gourmesso review, we'd love to hear from you.
