The Folgers 1850 Line
I grew up hearing a jingle that people over the age of 25 will probably know. It goes a little something like this. “The best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup.” As a kid I thought Folgers was literally the one and only coffee, but then something happened. In addition to growing up myself, coffee grew into a wildly popular industry with coffee houses dotting the country and bringing high end specialty roasted coffees and espresso to the masses. Now I love my Carmel Macchiato as much as anyone, but there’s a part of me that still longs for that nostalgic best part of waking up. That's where the Folgers 1850 line comes into play.
Folger’s is bringing it on and I confess that I’m just a little giddy about it! They are introducing their 1850’s line which is basically a premium modernized version of the coffee that millions of come to know and love. Folgers has always used 100% Arabica beans. The new Folgers 1850 single cup is said to have a deeper bolder flavor than previous blends. The 1850 roast comes in whole bean, ground and single serve coffee pods with a few different roast options. While I'm looking forward to the whole bean and ground versions, I'm especially excited that the Folgers 1850 comes in the modernized convenience of a single serve cup.
It's worth noting that Folgers already has an existing line of gourmet K Cups. Folgers Black Silk Dark Roast is one prime example of the company's foray into the gourmet / premium coffee arena. However, the 1850 line takes the game to whole new level. The idea behind this bold business move is based in the company's desire to better target millennials. Regardless of how effective it is in achieving that specific goal, I'm looking very much forward to it.
On a personal note, when I was little, there was significance to the sound of the can opener breaking into a new can of Folgers. Not only was it the coffee my parents drank, it was the can we covered with construction paper to collect dues for our scouting clubs. It was the can we used as a makeshift piggy bank. Folgers has been a part of the American culture and lexicon since the San Francisco Gold Rush, since Stayin’ Alive was forever linked to the white jumpsuit, since The Material Girl wore layers of lace and since flannel was the face of grunge. Now we can have a taste if that classic American staple, reimagined as a modernized coffee experience.
The new premium 1850 line marries the best of modern coffee with the deep traditions that are written into the fabric of the Folgers brand. All this talk of Folgers and their new coffee makes me wonder if I should have ever walked away from the original Folgers. Sure there are fancier brands out there, but I can't deny the undeniable nostalgic effect that comes from having “Folgers in your cup.” Folgers takes me back to the basics of why I started drinking coffee in the first place. I feel both excited about their new offering and a little guilty that I ever stopped loving this brand. I will admit that when I’m camping it's been Folgers in my cup. But now with the Folgers 1850 line on the horizon, I might just always have Folgers in my cup.
The highly anticipated pod is expected to hit shelves around April. Stay tuned for our full Folgers 1850 review.
