[Update: I've been drinking this protein coffee pretty much every day for the last 2 weeks. Aside from the fact that this is one of the best tasting protein coffees out there, I'm really appreciating the convenience of getting a clean source of protein and coffee at the same time.]
There are some people who would consider me a coffee snob. At the same time, there are others who in comparison would call me a coffee commoner. Regardless of what category I fall under, I share this to let you know that I approached this protein coffee review as a long time coffee lover as opposed to just a hardcore protein fanatic. Up to this point, I'd heard of some of the best tasting protein coffees brands before but just never had a desire to try them. The thought of extra protein in my morning brew just never appealed to me.

However, I recently chose to step outside of my coffee box and took an opportunity to try a popular premium protein coffee by Maine Roast. It's an iced coffee and protein shake combined. If the thought of that combination doesn't immediately appeal to you, I totally understand. But nonetheless, I strongly encourage you to keep reading.
I admit that part of my incentive to do this review was the fact that I've been on the Ketogenic Diet (low carb high fat) for almost half a year and admittedly, hadn't been getting enough protein in my diet. So this chance to review a premium protein coffee was literally right on time for me. A company called Complete Nutrition generously supplied me with their Maine Roast protein coffee in exchange for an honest take on their product.

Let's just say that after trying their product, my perspective on protein coffee has been totally revamped.

Complete Nutrition Protein Coffee Review: The Taste

As soon as I took my first sip of the original blend, I was immediately taken aback by the flavor. For a product that contains 0 added sugars, the taste was absolutely phenomenal. This coffee would be a delicious treat regardless of the added protein benefits. How they've managed to formulate something so practical yet delicious is beyond me.
Main Roast sources its coffee from the mountains of Colombia. It's flavor is mildly sweet yet deeply satisfying to the palette. I'd describe it as a refined, balanced sweetness that tastes natural and isn't overwhelming. In an era of unhealthy and over-sweetened coffee drinks, this is a welcomed change from the norm. The iced coffee was a refreshing treat for me as I started my day and I found myself looking forward to a cup each morning.
For those who like it even sweeter, I'd recommend the Caramel Frappe. What makes this Caramel Frappe exceptional is that it doesn't taste artificial like many other similarly-flavored beverages. While it's a great-tasting iced coffee, my palette prefers the more subtle flavor and sweetness of the original blend.
In the end, this product has been regarded as one of the best tasting protein coffees available. And now I understand why.

Complete Nutrition Protein Coffee Review: The Protein
While this product passed the flavor test with flying colors, we can't forget that taste is only 50% of the equation. What about the protein?
Maine Roast uses a Whey Protein Isolate which is considered the fastest digesting protein with the lowest amount of fat per gram. This makes this protein coffee for ideal customers who are counting their calories. Each serving comes with 15 grams of protein.
For some brief context, I'm a fairly active coffee lover who plays basketball, tennis, and hikes regularly. After trying this coffee for a few days, I've noticed some distinct effects of having the additional protein in my system. To start, this premium protein coffee gave me a very satiated feeling. I felt a energized but not “wired” which in my opinion is a good bodily state to be in.
During one of the days I drank this coffee, I found myself doing some fairly strenuous manual labor outdoors and was surprised to feel how much energy I had during that time. As I mentioned earlier, I had been short on my protein intake so drinking Maine Roast's protein coffee literally made a world of difference on my energy levels.
Anyone who drinks coffee, red bulls, and/or tea will know that not all caffeine is created equal. The 115 mg/serving (equivalent to two shots of espresso) of caffeine that comes from Maine Roast also feels particularly clean and sustainable. In other words, I was jitter-free and didn't experience some dramatic crash after the caffeine wore off. That's a huge plus.
Another notable quality about this protein coffee is that mixes really easily and thoroughly. That's not exactly a make or break in the decision process, but it's always nice when you don't have unmixed clumps of powder in your drink.
Who is this Best For?
I'd recommend this coffee for anyone who appreciates very flavorful coffee and also wants more protein in their diet. That may seem like an obvious statement since we're talking about “protein coffee”. But if you were like me and had reservations of mixing the two together, I can tell you that it's definitely worth trying. I'm confident that like me, you won't be disappointed. Not only is it hands down one of the best tasting protein coffees available, it also delivers a clean and efficient source of protein giving any coffee lover or protein lover the best of both worlds.
