Dean & Deluca is well known for setting the gold standard in the gourmet food and beverage industry. From their unbelievably flavorful meats to their top of the line cheeses, the company has clearly earned its stellar and established reputation. As many a customer has put it, Dean and Deluca doesn't sell products, they sell experiences. So does this statement hold true for their coffee? The folks at Dean and Deluca were kind enough to send us a sample of their French Roast in exchange for an unbiased review. Check out our Dean and Deluca French Roast coffee review below to see if their coffee lives up to the company's reputation.
Bean Freshness
As soon as the bag was opened, an irresistible coffee bean aroma filled the air. It's the type of freshness you'd expect from a gourmet foods company and it was an encouraging sign of things to come. For those who've had the unfortunate experience of opening and smelling a bag of stale coffee beans, they know that scent can be a tell-tale sign of coffee quality. The beans themselves were coated with a slight oil indicating their high degree of freshness. Having never tried Dean and Deluca coffee before, we were quite excited about brewing these fresh beans in our coffee machine and seeing what kind of “coffee experience” Dean and Deluca offered.
Dean and Deluca French Roast: Bold, Smooth, and not Bitter
The Dean and Deluca French Roast is unlike you're average French Roast which can often be too bitter depending on your brand of choice. “Over-bitterness” is the arch-enemy of the French Roast as it tends to overwhelm the intended flavor of the drink. We're glad to report that Dean and Deluca's French Roast coffee is anything but that. It's unquestionably bold, rich and most importantly, balanced. The result of this balanced blend is that you're able to fully savor the complexities of its flavor. In fact, this meticulously balanced mixture of flavored notes is precisely where Dean and Deluca's French Roast shines. The tasteful accents of dark chocolate, caramel, and nutmeg are subtle but easily distinguishable to even an inexperienced palette. Too often do coffee descriptions tout flavors that you can't really taste. In this regard, the Dean and Deluca French Roast was a very welcomed change.
Dean and Deluca's French Roast is also very smooth. It coats the tongue with a genuinely satisfying layer of coffee goodness that we were thoroughly impressed with.
There's a gauge that's commonly used among home-brewing coffee lovers that differs from the standard 1-10 scale. First, you have coffee that tastes like it home brewed (not always a bad thing.) Then you have coffee that tastes so fresh that it feels like you're sitting in a coffee shop. Lastly, you have coffee that tastes like it came right out of a coffee shop in a 5-star hotel in Paris that's directly connected to a premier roastery. That's where the Dean and Deluca French Roast fits for us.
As coffee lovers ourselves, we know it's easy to fall victim to coffee complacency and stick with only a select few brands. But take it from us. If you do venture outside your coffee comfort zone, you won't go wrong with the Dean and Deluca French Roast. We can confidently say that the Dean and Deluca French Roast more than lives up to the company's reputation of top quality food and beverages. This is easily one of the best and most complex French Roast's we've ever had that will remain a favorite for along time.
