Anyone familiar with my coffee journey will know I’m always on the lookout for brands that offer a unique coffee experience. As cliché as it may sound, coffee for me has always been about an experience as opposed to just a liquid that one consumes for a pick-me-up. An opportunity recently came up for me to review a brand name Caffe Borbone. It sounded like an interesting prospect so happily obliged to receive their coffee in exchange for an honest review. I received no compensation for this Caffe Borbone review.
Allow me to say a few words before getting right into this Caffe Borbone review.
Where a coffee bean comes from is important. A bean’s specific origins have an immeasurable influence on a coffee’s final flavor, texture, body, and overall quality. As a coffee lover, I also love studying the details of a bean’s heritage. It gives me a deeper appreciation for the effort that goes into my morning brew. Even with this insight, I realized I may have been missing an important characteristic of a beans’ origins. That is, coffee style. My recent experience with real Italian coffee from Caffe Borbone helped me appreciate the idea of coffee style. The Italian way. I’ll go into this more as the review continues.
Caffe Borbone Coffee Review
My introduction to Caffe Borbone coffee began with two brews that were best-suited for black coffee, espresso, or latte brews. The Borbone Espresso Intenso and Crema Classica are both created from a specific blend of beans selected for the full-bodied flavor and creamy taste. However, I recommend enjoying these coffees in the Italian style in order to maximize your experience.
Italian Brew Styles
The Italian style I speak of prioritizes brewing expertise while fostering deep social connections when enjoying your coffee.
Let’s talk brewing methods.
While I ironically don’t own an espresso machine, my love for espresso-based beverages remains unabated. I often rely on a Moka pot or French press to brew my espresso. The Borbone Espresso Intenso and Crema Classica prove to be exceptional choices for all things espresso. Borbone rates the coffee flavor intensity of the Intenso at a remarkable 9/10 and the Crema at a close 8/10. These are accurate assessments in my opinion.
Borbone’s ground coffee is not your average grind. Borbone micro grinds this coffee to absolute perfection immediately before packaging to ensure definite freshness. I cannot say enough about the grind quality. It really is the basis for excellent flavor extraction and I noticed these grinds were as consistent as they were fine. Although this ultra-fine grind requires that you be very meticulous when measuring out your water to coffee ratios. My moka pot and french press created a very creamy texture, full of flavor and intensity. I enjoyed cup after cup of straight espresso and cappuccino. However, my favorite brew with both the Intenso and Crema was an espresso macchiato (a shot of espresso stained with frothed milk).
Now let’s take a closer look at the taste of both brews.
Taste: Caffe Borbone
Borbone Espresso Intenso
This particular blend is made from purely Robusta beans to give the brew an intensely bold and slightly bitter flavor. It’s a refined bitterness that’s not too strong and in fact, contributes to the full bodied flavor profile that I experienced when drinking it.
It’s strong, creamy, and deeply flavorful with just the right amount of bite.
Borbone Crema Classica
For those who appreciate milk-based beverages, I would highly recommend their Crema Classica. I thoroughly enjoyed this coffee…and did so without any sugar and cream. It’s full-bodied and balanced. This is most likely due to the fact that this blend sources high quality Arabica and Robusta beans. You’ll notice a distinct sweetness to this brew that’s persists from the initial sip through the finish. Arabica beans are often sweeter and more complex in flavor while Robusta beans are undeniably bold. Learn more about the differences between Arabica and Robusta.
The expertise in bean selection is undeniable, resulting in an intense coffee experience without a hint of bitterness. A smooth but intense flavor profile is the perfect espresso for me.
Both coffees exhibit low acidity, complemented by higher levels of body and sweetness, making them ideal for straight espresso, black drip coffee brewing, and even milk-based beverages.
I found that strangely enough, both coffees delivered a robust yet balanced flavor that never overpowers the underlying sweetness. This was more noticeable with the Crema Classica of course being that it had a sweeter profile. This harmonious blend of flavors is evident in both the texture and aroma of the coffee. The smooth, velvety texture of the coffee complements the intense flavor of the roast, ensuring that added cream or milk does not overpower the authentic coffee taste.
Drinking Coffee Together
My experience with Borbone was echoed by several friends and family. That fact speaks volumes given how my particular social circle encompasses a broad range of coffee preferences. All I can say is the taste of quality is palatable and can transcend differences in individual flavor profiles.
And that brings me back to the idea of coffee style. I drink coffee every day. While I brew it, I definitely have either my wife or co-workers in mind. It is our routine, together, and always matters. This is a major reason we love coffee. It is both our ritual (as Borbone says) and the catalyst for genuine social experiences. I love coffee because it touches so many senses, but I love coffee more when I enjoy it in community. This is the Italian style of coffee. A style I was already experiencing and appreciating it without fully realizing it. And with Borbone you get a coffee base that offers consistent flavor in a wide variety of brew methods that just adds to the coffee experience.
Cold Cream Coffee
No Caffe Borbone review would be complete with the mention of one of their cold cream coffee. If you’re wondering “what is cold cream coffee”, you are certainly not alone.
Cold cream coffee refers to a variety of iced coffee beverages that incorporate a rich, foamy layer of sweetened cream, typically made with heavy cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract. This creamy topping adds a decadent and luxurious touch to the coffee, making it a popular choice among coffee enthusiasts who enjoy a sweeter, more indulgent iced coffee experience.
If you and your coffee companions are seeking an even more unique coffee experience, I wholeheartedly recommend Caffe Borbone’s Crema Fredda Caffe. It’s a cold cream coffee served chilled from the refrigerator or freezer.
Caffe Borbone’s Crema Fredda Caffe delivers an explosion of coffee flavor in a refreshing, dessert-like frozen cream pour. While some may associate coffee with excessive syrups and milk, these additives often overpower the inherent flavor of coffee. The Crema Fredda strikes a perfect balance, catering to both preferences. The creamy, frozen texture caters to those seeking an indulgent dessert alternative, while the underlying taste showcases a clean coffee flavor. It’s an experience worth indulging in.
