Many of us know what it’s like to be a creature of habit. We make attempts to try new things but somehow end up going back to what we know. While this is true for anyone, I think it’s especially true for us coffee lovers. Trying new things for coffee lovers can end up being quite the challenge. But enhancing your daily coffee grind doesn’t mean you have to switch brands or blends entirely. There are actually a number of incredibly simple things you can do to your existing coffee to make your coffee experience. With that said, we’ve put together a list of 10 unique coffee tips that are sure to bring new life to your cup of Joe. Depending on your taste profile, these suggestions will be a better fit for some than others.
Top 10 Unique Coffee Tips
Add Salt to your Coffee
Your first reaction to the first of these unique coffee tips might be an emphatic “no way!” Understandable. However, adding salt to coffee doesn’t make the coffee saltier but instead, helps to reduce and suppress bitterness. Coffee bitterness is often what prevents newcomers from becoming coffee lovers. If you find yourself introducing a friend to coffee, try dropping a little salt to lower bitterness and make the coffee experience more palatable for his/her virgin taste buds. Reducing bitterness in coffee also allows more of the natural coffee flavors to be enjoyed.
Add Chocolate to your Coffee
If you’re a cream and sugar type of coffee lover, then consider adding a small squirt of chocolate syrup to your coffee. The subtle hint of chocolate is a real delight and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the chocolaty accent. Incidentally, some of the most sought after coffee beans in the world are imbued with a natural chocolate flavor. If you don’t have any chocolate syrup on hand, you can always break off a piece of a Hershy’s candy bar or put it some powdered hot cocoa. For those who want to takeit to the next level, grab a Godiva bar instead 🙂 Of course, there’s always the option to buy coffee that is already chocolate-flavored. If you’re searching for an excellent choice for chocolate-flavored coffee, we recommend Out of the Grey Coffee’s Fairview’s Finest.
Add Cinnamon or Nutmeg to your Coffee
Cinnamon and Nutmeg are excellent and healthy alternatives to sugar. Cinnamon is sometimes referred to as the “wonder spice” for its beneficial effects on memory, alertness, and cognitive development. Not to be outdone, nutmeg is sought after as its full of vitamins and minerals that help relieve chronic inflammation. While both cinnamon and nutmeg will help improve your health and sweeten your coffee, we can’t forget that they are first and foremost, spices. They are certain to give your brew a nice “kick”. I personally find the extra pizzazz to be a welcomed addition to my coffee experience.
Add Honey to your Coffee
If you’re looking for just sweet and no spice, then honey is an excellent option. I use honey in my coffee instead of sugar and have found the taste to be cleaner and more enjoyable. We recommend using high quality organic honey as it will make a big difference in the overall flavor.
Add Caramel to your Coffee
Caramel is one of those things that I think makes everything in the coffee world taste better. If sweet and savory describes your taste profile, then you have to at least try coffee with caramel.
Make your own Coffee Blend
Who ever said that you can only have one type of coffee in your mug at a time. Blending your favorite coffee flavors into a single drink can be a risk, but the rewards are great. While there’s no official science to doing this, you could consider the qualities of each flavor and mix and match them accordingly. For example, merging a light roast and a dark roast or a slightly sweet with a slightly bitter coffee could make for some amazing results.
Adding Pepper to Coffee
The thought of adding pepper to your coffee may sound just as unappealing as salt. But, as with salt, you don’t taste the pepper as you might think. Black pepper actually helps embolden the existing coffee flavor and as a huge bonus, can also help with sinuses. The experience is often described as a warm sensation in your nasal passages as you drink the coffee.
Flavor the Coffee Grounds
When you flavor the coffee grounds as opposed to an already brewed cup of coffee, you’re infusing the coffee source. You’ll get a more intense flavor that’s absorbed into the bean itself. It’s a similar concept to marinating meat versus flavoring it after its already been cooked.
Adding Butter to your Coffee
Companies such as Bulletproof Coffee have introduced the idea of adding butter to coffee as a way to improve energy levels, work performance and weight loss. It’s important to note that the butter we’re talking about isn’t just regular butter. In order to fully reap the health benefits of adding butter to your coffee, you’ll need to use unsalted, grass-fed butter. The principle behind this is that high fat and low sugar combinations result in more sustained energy over time as opposed to the crash / burn experience that often comes from high sugar and high (regular) fat diets.
Add Coconut Oil
Rounding out this list of unique coffee tips is coconut oil. There are many health reasons for adding coconut oil to your coffee. Studies have shown that coconut oil has been known to improve your immune system and metabolism. These health benefits alone could justify adding it but fortunately, the sweet and rich coconut flavor can be a great complement to your coffee as well.
You may have noticed that many of these unique coffee tips call for subtle amounts of each ingredient. These ingredients are intended to serve as accents. Adding too much of any ingredient can overpower the actual coffee itself and ruin the experience. Admittedly, there are times when I go overboard with the coffee flavorings. I’ve heard more than once in my lifetime “you want some coffee with that sugar?” Nonetheless, if you’re looking for ways to treat your taste buds to new experiences, you can’t go wrong with the above list.
