The coffee subscription box industry has experienced explosive growth over the recent years. Coffee lovers are now looking for more out of their coffee experience, and these new and improved coffee subscription boxes have sought to meet this evolving demand. One such company is Trade Coffee, which focuses on delivering fresh specialty coffees right to your door. In today's market, this statement on its own isn't particularly out of the ordinary. Many companies tout this. Yet for some reason Trade Coffee is referred to by many as the best coffee subscription in the nation. That being the case, we at Best Quality Coffee were curious about putting this bold claim to the test. So we reached out and Trade Coffee was offered us a taste of their offerings in exchange to review. Check out our Trade Coffee Subscription review to see our take on this popular coffee service.
In my opinion, what immediately sets this company apart is that it offers over 400+ different specialty coffee options. That's a lot of coffee to try. At the same time, when it comes to coffee, we know it's not about quantity but quality. Fortunately, from the looks of their impressive lineup, Trade Coffee's service fits the bill on both ends. It's clear that whoever curated this list knows good coffee.
The Trade Coffee subscription allows its customers to personalize their taste profile to ensure the best match possible. While identifying your taste profile is something most coffee subscriptions also offer, I found Trade Coffee's tool to be very thorough and easy to use. They ask you to answer 6 basic questions about your coffee routine to get a sense for your overall preferences. What's nice about this profile tool is that it provides options for all types of coffee lovers whether you're a bonafide coffee geek or just a normal coffee drinker.
For this Trade Coffee review, we selected two specialty brews from Onyx: the Monarch and the Geometry to be sampled by one of our resident coffee connoisseurs. Sampling just one of their available brands obviously doesn't speak for the rest. However, I've found that when you spot test a coffee company's subscription offerings, you can still get a good gauge of the company's overall standards.
Trade Coffee Subscription Review – by Jason D.
I recently had the privilege to try a roaster that’s been on my radar for a long time. Onyx Coffee lab (Hand Crafted, Small Batch) was established in 2012. The black bag is extremely appealing with its gold font and style immediately reminiscent of an old-world map. It also includes a logo of a skull on the bottom and a ‘Never Settle for Good Enough’ slogan on the back. On the side of the bag, a short 6 step description with symbols provides an overview of the brewing process. A subtle inclusion displays a symbol of a record noting ‘Put on your favorite record’. Genius; a simple reminder to relax and enjoy the quality and sanctity of a great cup of coffee!
One of the unique aspects of Onyx is their delineation of roasting levels. You’re not going to see a label referencing ‘light roast’ or ‘dark roast’. Instead, a sticker illustrates a line graph noting ‘Traditional’ to ‘Modern’. The sticker also includes additional informative information, including the elevation, origin, and flavor notes.
Onyx considers the Monarch roast a ‘Traditional’ coffee. Its origins include Ethiopia and Colombia with an average elevation of 2000 meters. Upon opening the bag, I was taken aback by the amazing aromas. I enjoyed smelling the bag for minutes and smelled subtle hints of fruit. Its aroma includes notes of raspberry, dark chocolate, and citrus. The beans appear to be medium-roasted in color, but its bouquet confirmed a light roast coffee.
While I generally prefer the French Press method of coffee production, I chose the traditional pour-over method. I wasn’t disappointed. The crema was light and the coffee was rich in color. The coffee is smooth and rich and includes a light aftertaste reminiscent of an Ethiopian bean. I'd recommend the Onyx Monarch for those who like a light and fruity cup of coffee.
The Geometry roast is considered a roast between Tradition and Modern. Its origins similarly stem from Ethiopia and Columbia with an average elevation of 1950 meters. The aroma is extremely sweet, with notes of fruit and honey.
Once again, I enjoyed the coffee using the pour-over method. The beans are medium-light in color. The bag references notes of black tea, which is a perfect description of its taste. A slight bitterness is noted with a mild and nutty aftertaste. The coffee is silky smooth with a dense mouthfeel. Geometry could easily become a favorite every-day coffee!
Overall, both roasts offer subtle similarities and could be used with any brewing method. Onyx Coffee Lab exceeded my expectations, and I look forward to trying additional roasts! When I drink Onyx Coffee, I’ll be forever reminded to spin a favorite record, relax, and enjoy its excellent quality!
Quick Note about Onyx Coffee Lab Website
The Onyx Coffee Lab website is as attractive as its coffee. Short, embedded videos are automatically played on multiple pages and give the visitor a closer glimpse at the company. The videos are appealing and provide an intimate look into its coffee production and locations. The site also includes a ‘Learn' section, which offers extensive learning opportunities. ‘How to brew a perfect cup‘ is a page dedicated to brewing methods, including how-to videos (videos range from 1 minute to over 8 minutes). Additional pages include learning more about the Onyx culture and its history. I'm convinced that its slogan (‘Never Settle For Good Enough') is just as much a reminder for its company as it is for its customers. It's a simple reminder that Onyx will continue to strive for excellence.
