Most coffee lovers who often find themselves on the go are used to having to make compromises when it comes to their brew. The dilemma usually involves finding a balance between quality and convenience. However, innovations in the coffee industry are now making it so you don't have to sacrifice taste and flavor just to save time.
In my search for the best coffee options on the go, I came across Muhlhaus Coffee which offers their brew in innovative single serve pour over pouches. If you have no idea what those are, you're not alone. I was intrigued by this coffee delivery form and wondered how good their coffee really was when brewed in this manner. For those who may not know, many coffee connoisseurs consider the pour over brew method to be the method of choice. This being the case, I was especially interested to see how this coffee stacked up to coffee made in something like a Chemex. I reached out to the company and they were generous enough to send me their coffee to test in exchange for an unbiased Muhlhaus Coffee review.
Before diving right into this Muhlaus coffee review, there are a few things to note about this coffee:
- 100% USDA Organic
- Eco-friendly packaging and filter are 100% renewable and compostable
- Convenient single serve pour over pouch
- Just add hot water
- The company was recently featured in an episode of Elevator Pitch.
Muhlhaus Coffee Review: Convenience
Let's face it. Bringing a Chemex or even a Keurig machine while traveling is simply not practical. Many people think you have to resort to instant coffee in order to get the best coffee on the go. While it's true that the quality of instant coffee has come a very long way since the olden days, it still cannot stand up to a well brewed pour over coffee. That's less a shot on instant coffee brands, but rather; it's more of a observation about chemistry and the limitations of a given brewing process.
Their single serve pour over pouch was implemented very well making it extremely simple to use. Just pull out the paper tabs from the side and fold them over the cup's edge. This will suspend the coffee filter in the middle of the cup. Tear along the perforated edge of the coffee filter to open it up and then just add water into the coffee filter. Within a minute or so, you'll be treated to gourmet coffee. I particularly like how flat these pouches which makes them all the more easy to stack, pack, and store. Muhlhaus Coffee comes in pouches that hold up to 4 single serve pour over packs. I was impressed by how much coffee was able to fit into such a small space.
The portable single serve pour over is perfect for whenever you're at a hotel, traveling, outdoors, or at the office (we all know office coffee can sometimes be horrid.) .
Muhlhaus Coffee Review: Taste
Convenience is of little value, if it comes at the expense of quality. So how does this coffee taste? Let's just say it meets all of my criteria of what constitutes truly gourmet coffee. For this review, I sampled the Muhlhaus Wanderer Roast which is essentially a dark French roast. I was thoroughly impressed by its depth, strength, and boldness. It's a French Roast that's actually a very nice fit for my taste profile which leans toward a stronger richer coffee. This coffee wasn't too overwhelming in bitterness and in my opinion, had just the right amount of bite in the aftertaste to complement the overall flavor. I haven't had the opportunity to try some of their other blends, but if this is French Roast is any indication of their other brews, I'm in for a real treat. [I'll update this article accordingly as our reviewers taste test the other flavors]
This coffee is also 100% USDA Organic which is a huge bonus in my book. I'm big on organic coffee not only for health reasons, but also for taste reasons. In my experience, organic coffee just has a cleaner flavor than non-organic coffee and Muhlhaus coffee illustrates that. Check out this article on why it's better to buy organic coffee.
Muhlhaus Coffee Review: Eco-friendliness
As mentioned earlier, this coffee packaging and filter are 100% renewable and compostable. Unlike certain K-Cups and coffee pods, these single serve pour overs leave a much smaller environmental footprint and are highly sustainable and eco-friendly. While this may not be a big deal some coffee lovers, I think it speaks volumes about a company's ethos when they care about how a product affects the environment.
In conclusion, I found this coffee to be delicious in flavor, superior in convenience, impressively eco-friendly, and competitively-priced. I don't think there's much else you can ask from a company looking to reinvent the way the coffee world thinks about portable coffee. I'd highly recommend this to those avid coffee drinkers who don't simply will not compromise their coffee standards when on the move.
