The coffee subscription box industry is fiercely competitive. To survive, a company has to deliver exceptional coffee as well as be unique enough to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. I've seen my share of coffee subscription boxes come and go and I'd like to think I've developed a keen eye for successful and unsuccessful ones. I recently learned of a new and very promising coffee subscription box called Free Coffee Box. They sent us a box in exchange for an unbiased review and so today we'll take a closer look to see just how well it delivers.
What Makes this Coffee Subscription Box special?
- Their coffee is 100% organic, Kosher, Fair Trade Certified, and Non-GMO
- Their coffee is all single origin which means they are not blends
- You may be wondering why the company is called Free Coffee Box. You get a free coffee box with any 6 or 12 month subscription
- Fully recyclable packaging
- Their coffee comes in single serve pour over pouches
The last bullet point will be of great interest to most coffee lovers especially coffee lovers on the go. Not sure what a single serve pour over format? You're not alone. Read on.
What is a Single Serve Pour Over
The single serve pour over is a small portable pouch of coffee. In this case, very high quality coffee. This pouch has tabs that unfold allowing the coffee grounds to be suspended over the opening of a mug or cup. Hot water is slowly poured into the pouch just as you would with a standard pour over. The convenience and portability of this coffee allows you to take it literally anywhere whether it's the office, vacation, or camping. As an outdoor enthusiast myself, I can easily see myself brewing a cup over a campfire.
It's a well-known fact among coffee nerds that the pour over method will yield the best coffee. However, it takes a lot more time than popping a K-Cup into a Keurig machine. From my perspective, most people who use the pour over method really care about maximizing the quality of their coffee and are willing to spend the extra time to perfect it. Those who drink K-Cups and coffee pods typically care about good coffee but value convenience more. This is where the single serve pour over brew method addresses a real need in the coffee loving world. This delivery form is ideal for people who need portability BUT are willing to spend some extra time making their coffee. We recommend checking out our article on the single serve pour over to learn more.
These pouches are durable and thick. There's nothing worse than having one of these unexpectedly break spilling all the grounds into your brew. To address this, the company used sturdy but precisely porous filter. The perforated pouch is also very easy to open. These things may not seem that important. But when you're selling convenience, it makes all the difference.
Organic Ethiopian Coffee
- Mild Acidity
- Natural fruit and floral notes that are stronger than most
- Medium Roast
Good quality coffee usually accentuates the natural flavors of the coffee bean. This coffee is a prime example of that. The coffee has a very clean floral and fruit flavor that tastes pure – the way nature intended. This flavor is also very distinct unlike most of the other Ethiopian coffees I've tried. In fact, I can't recall ever drinking an Ethiopian coffee that offered such an intense but refined sweetness. I was a big fan. And if you know me, I'm not usually partial to fruity coffees. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the beans were of such superior quality. This is a great tasting brew than also has a mild acidity and medium body. This coffee boasts a wonderfully unique aroma as well. I could literally smell its sweetness before even drinking it.
Organic Costa Rican Coffee
- Lower Acidity and Bitterness
- Subtle sweetness of honey
- Medium Roast
Free Coffee Box scored another win with their Costa Rican coffee. This brew offers a milder sweetness and acidity compared to the Ethiopian coffee. There's a very enjoyable lingering aftertaste of honey that lasts much longer than most finishes. The coffee is smooth but not too smooth. Sometimes when a coffee is too smooth, you lose the nuances of flavor. This Costa Rican single serve pour over has minimal bitterness yet is still full of complex sweet notes that will delight the senses.
Organic Guatemalan Coffee
- Very natural flavor
- Medium Body
- Medium Roast
I enjoyed this brew as well for its natural sweetness. There's no artificial taste whatsoever probably because there were no artificial flavors used. This fact is extra apparent when tasting their organic Guataleman coffee. I enjoyed the medium body of this coffee and like with the others, really appreciated its pure and clean taste.
Free Coffee Box Pricing
The company offers a 1, 6, and 12 month plan starting at $19.99/month. If you commit to a longer plan, you'll pay less and get a box for free. Another thing worth noting is when you sign up as a member / customer, you can access to coffee refills which are significantly reduced in price. I really like that about this coffee subscription box and think more companies should make this option available.
Free Coffee Box Review: Summary
Once again, it's obvious that Free Coffee Box uses very high quality beans. I cannot reiterate this point enough because after trying 3 different brews, I was amazed at how consistently natural their flavors were. Free Coffee Box has a total of 6 different single origin brews to choose from and I look forward to trying all of them in the future. I know quality coffee when I taste it…or even smell it. This brand meets every metric for what I consider premium gourmet coffee.
This coffee subscription is perfect for those who won't compromise on their coffee but still desire convenience. Free Coffee Box addresses the specific need and I believe the coffee world is better for it.
