As anyone who's familiar with our site knows, we're always on the look out for hidden coffee gems. We recently came across a brand called Currency Coffee. The company is based out of Dalton, Massachusetts which is considered the home of American currency. Thus the name “Currency Coffee” was only fitting. In this Currency Coffee review, we take a look at the quality and flavor of this coffee and discuss the type of coffee lover it's best-suited for.
The company was sent us some bags of their gourmet coffee for an unbiased review.
Oaxaca Coffee:
Certifications: USDA Organic, Fair Trade Certified
Roast: Light
Brewing Method: Pour Over
Aroma: Currency Coffee Review
I normally prefer medium to dark as far as roasts go. But after smelling this Mexican light roast, I decided to to try it first. The aroma had a refined sweetness to it that was a very pleasant surprise to me. I could smell different floral and bright notes of the coffee which normally I only discern when actually tasting the coffee. It reminded me of a natural hazelnut smell.
Taste: Currency Coffee Review
I was very impressed by the flavor of this Currency Coffee blend. Light roasts generally allow more of the natural flavor of the coffee bean to express itself. I could taste a pronounced yet very well-balanced sweetness in the coffee. This sweetness tapers to an equally well-balanced aftertaste with just the right amount of acidity. Light roasts can sometimes be too acidic for my tastes which is why I really appreciate the experience this coffee delivers. For a light roast bursting with so much flavor, this coffee is exceptionally smooth and refined.
True to the coffee's tasting notes, this blend was complex in that it had deep chocolate notes mixed with hints of walnut and honey. It's definitely sweeter than the coffees I usually drink but it was a welcomed change to my normal routine. One of the reasons I don't favor sweet coffee is because the “sweetness” can sometimes taste artificial. Fortunately, this Currency Coffee blend tastes very natural and the flavors don't feel forced.
Currency Coffee's Oaxaca blend is perfect for light roast coffee lovers who want to savor a wide range of complex flavors. This is one of the best light roasts I've had in a long while.

Justice Blend:
Certifications: Circle K Kosher
Roast: Dark
Brewing Method: Pour Over
Aroma: Currency Coffee Review
I really enjoyed the smell of this particular blend. I'm not sure what it is about these specific coffee beans, but their aromas seem to reveal so much more than others I've come across. You can tell this coffee is rich just by the smell. It's also accented with a slight winey fragrance that I typically can't identify when smelling a dark roast.

The Justice Blend is Currency Coffee's most popular brew. Being a dark roast, it's the blend I would've gone for first if it weren't for the captivating aroma of the Oaxaca blend. The Justice blend is bold, rich, and offers a classic dark roast flavor that's teeming with the flavor of specialty-grade coffee beans. This blend delivers a delightful mixture of African and Sumatra coffee beans. What makes this blend remarkable is that it uses coffee beans with opposite flavor profiles. African coffees are typically very bright and floral while Sumatran beans are grounded, earthen, low-acid, and bold. Yet somehow Currency Coffee has discovered the ideal ratios for mixing these coffees to achieve a brew that's as bold as it is bright.
For all of this coffee's subtly bright flavors, this blend stays true to the what dark roast coffee lover's look for. This coffee's deep flavor also makes for a great espresso.

In the end, Currency Coffee has thoroughly impressed me with their gourmet coffee offerings. They sell a wide variety of coffee flavors from single origins to quality seasonal blends so there's literally something for every kind of coffee lover. I was surprised to find they even sell 100% recyclable coffee pods of their Civilization blend. The company's tagline is “Value for Value“. Having tasted their coffee, I can say it's a very fitting description of their fine brews.
