Cometeer Coffee Review: The Details
As a disclaimer, Cometeer Coffee sent me some of their product in exchange for a completely honest assessment of their coffee.
So as coffee lovers, we all know the drill when it comes to specialty-grade coffee.
The best coffee companies in the business meticulously source and hand-pick coffee beans for their unique flavor profile. That same level of detail is then applied to the roasting process where expert roasters bring out the all the flavor intricacies those nuanced beans have to offer. Those precision-roasted beans are packaged to ensure freshness and flavor before landing in our hands. From this point, it's up to us as the customers to grind and brew these beans in a manner that matches the extraordinary energy and care that brought them into our presence in the first place.
Yet, most of us aren't SCA experts and don't even qualify as coffee nerds or connoisseurs. I will be the first to admit, I have screwed up some very fine coffee with less than fine home brewing. Some of us opt for certain methods such as French press or Pour over, in an attempt to readily transform that great coffee bean into a great cup of Joe.
Well, Cometeer has effectively taken any mediocre to “less than desirable” brewing habits out of the equation.
A Coffee Delivery From out of this World – Perhaps Via a Comet
First, Cometeer is not trying to reinvent the wheel….I mean, bean.
Instead, Cometeer has partnered with some of the most reputable roasters across the country each of whom have proven they know how to source and roast at the highest levels of the industry.
[We include a list of some of their roasters later in this Cometeer Coffee review]
Cometeer Inc then takes these refined beans and puts them through their proprietary brewing process. They've developed an extraction process that's as precise as it is thorough managing to pull out every last flavor note that their beans have to offer. And, they have designed a system to offer that fresh brewed coffee with not just optimum but maximum freshness.
So come on down to your local Cometeer coffee shop and taste a masterfully brewed cup of their coffee now! Just kidding. Cometeer is a mail order only coffee company, so they have to ship their “hyper” fresh brewed greatness to you.
So Cometeer actually brews high-quality coffee first and then mails it to me? You might be thinking “what sorcery is this?”
Sit back down, there’s more. After extracting a pure coffee concentrate from the bean, it's brewed at 10x strength and then flash frozen at -321 degrees. Then they ship it to you. Through Cometeer’s exacting brewing process they have effectively taken the best beans, brewed them with extreme and repeatable precision, flash frozen the brewed results and packaged the frozen product in a single-use k-cup style package called Comets. And it's a fitting name being that the quality, freshness, convenience is on levels that are out of this world. Somehow they've been able to preserve all the subtle nuanced flavors of a freshly and expertly roasted coffee bean.
My Cometeer was delivered frozen on dry ice as perfect and fresh as the day it was brewed.
Coffee Cometeer Reivew: The Brew Process
So my process for preparing the coffee was as follows: I boiled some water. That’s it.
No machines, no paper filters, no presses, just my favorite kettle and some crystal clean Big Sky Montana water. Pop the top on the comet and drop that precious little frozen puck into the boiled water. Within minutes I was drinking one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had.
I could easily spend a lot of time describing the flavors, the aroma, and the prominence of the several varieties of Cometeer Coffee I have been drinking. But, I will sum it up like this: Each cup of Cometeer Coffee I've had has been absolutely amazing and brewed to absolute perfection. It is without a doubt, very high-quality coffee and rivals the best coffee I've ever tasted. And, I will add, very, very consistent.
You might be thinking, the coffee may be great, but the whole process is a bit gimmicky. I’ll admit, I was a skeptical at first too. But an experience I had last week demonstrated that not only is Cometeer offering some of the best coffee, it is offering it in a very user-friendly, convenient delivery form that takes the element of bad brewing out of the coffee equation.
I was travelling in a very rural part of Big Sky Country (Montana) which included an extended stay in some very rustic lodging. I tossed a few Cometeer cups into the cooler for the drive and after arriving, transferred my Cometeer into the mini-fridge at the hotel…I mean motel. The next morning, a 2-minute boil using my backpacking stove and the plop of a frozen comet in my cup. I was soon sipping renown roaster Keba Konte’s Red Bay medium roast as if I was sitting next to him in his Oakland, CA office. The coffee was fabulous, fresh and had all the features that make me love the coffee experience. I didn’t get if from the hotel lobby, I didn’t have walk or drive looking for a coffee shop in an unfamiliar town, and I didn’t dare try to brew some beans in the dreaded room coffee maker. Cometeer brought me the best they had to offer in a simple package with a simple process.
In the last few weeks, I have enjoyed some mind-blowing coffee from Counter Culture roasters. A company that pioneered many of the features and practices I have come to equate with the farmers who grow the best, most responsible beans in the world. I have sipped to my soul’s content courtesy of Go Get Em Tiger roasters and experienced the warm coffee community Klatch roasters (Mike and Cindy) try to pour in every cup their beans touch. All this from a simple boil of water.
I will add this.
Cometeer’s revolutionary design allows for the same superior coffee experience if you happen to prefer an iced coffee, a hot or cold latte, or some other type of non-traditional cup. Simply move your comet from the freezer to the fridge and let it melt. Or, run the comet under some warm tap water before pouring in into your preferred cup. While I have only had a black, hot cup of Cometeer, I have no doubt Cometeer is equally great in a latte or other variant. I have been so impressed with Cometeer in the traditional coffee form that I just haven’t thought of mixing it with milk or cream.
Cometeer Cost and Price:
Cometeer coffee costs $2 puck ($1.38 if you use their $20 off coupon for new customers). When you compare this with high-end K Cups or coffee pods, this comes out as a clear winner. While the coffee pod technology has come along way since their inception in 1998, comparing them with the hyper fresh flash-freeze technology of Cometeer would be unfair and to some, a travesty. As mentioned in this Cometeer coffee review, these pucks are like drinking a cup of coffee brewed by the snobbiest of coffee snobs possible (and that's a good thing).
Cometeer Selection:
Cometter Coffee offers something for everyone. Their solid selection of light, medium, and dark roasts are sourced from various specialty-grade roasters. These roasts include both blends and single origin coffees. You can mix and match your options to best suit your flavor profile. What I especially appreciate about Cometeer is that they even have decaf and half caff options for those looking to limit their caffeine intake.
You may be asking who does Cometeer Coffee source their coffee from. Below are a few of the roasters they work with: Counter Culture, Bird Rock, George Howell, Equator, Birch, Joe Coffee, Red Bay, Go Get Em Tiger, Klatch, and Onyx. For those in the know, the players on this list speak volumes about Cometeer's standards for coffee.
Is it Cometeer Coffee Instant Coffee?
Given its instant nature, you might be wondering whether Cometeer Coffee is freeze dried. The answer is an emphatic NO. As stated on their website, it's coffee in its “purest form and then carefully brewed at 10x strength”. This coffee is frozen, not freeze-dried. Instant coffee is typically regular coffee that's been dehydrated. The result is a lack of flavor and aroma which is why instant coffee is often synonymous with low quality coffee.
It's also worth mentioning here that Cometeer Coffee is NOT a K-Cup or a coffee pods. Those require a machine and more significantly need to be brewed. Comet pucks, as it were, have already been expertyly brewed and simply need to be thawed and mixed with water.
To help illustrate Cometeer's hyper flash freezing technology, we've included a video courtesy of Cometeer.
Conculsion Cometeer Coffee Review
What Cometeer Coffee is offering in the world of coffee is unparalleled. And over 4,000 customer reviews echo this sentiment.
It may not seem like it given how unassuming these little coffee pucks are. But believe me, every aspect of the coffee process, from plant to cup, is the epitome of excellence. And, all of this in a very convenient, sustainable package. This is one of those coffee inventions that can justifiably be called “revolutionary”. Thank you Cometeer…you have a customer for life.
Cometeer Coffee is offering a $20 off discount coupon for all first time customers. That cuts down the total price to $44 / 32 comets.
