Why Does the Coffee Grind Matter?
In the end, brewing coffee is just chemistry. When coffee is ground to different sizes and shapes, it affects how the grounds interact with the hot water. Let's first talk size. If your coffee grounds are coarse or large, it'll take longer to extract the coffee's flavor which is perfect for a brew method like the French Press. Finer or smaller grinds release their flavor much faster and so are the size of choice for espresso which has a very fast brew time.
Other than size, there's also the issue of uniformity. If you have a bunch of coffee grounds that are all different sizes, it can actually make for a disastrous cup of coffee. Yes, it can literally make or break your morning brew. Blade grinders are cheaper and will typically produce a much more uneven grind. If you value a good cup of coffee, that's not ideal. However, burr grinders, which use gear-like burrs to evenly crush the coffee beans, will deliver a much more uniform grind. Visit our article on coffee grinding for more details.
Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder Review
Now that we've covered the basics, let's take a close look at the Capresso Infinity burr grinder. While this considered an entry-level burr grinder, it certainly doesn't perform or feel like one. It's been a few days since setting up the grinder and so far, I've fallen in love with it. Prior to this grinder I was using a Javapresse Manual Burr Grinder which while effective was labor-intensive. Having this automatic burr grinder has been a God-send for the coffee lover and time saver in me. This grinder is perfect for those who make their coffee with a drip brewer or French Press. When it comes to espresso, this grinder performs well too although there are certainly higher end grinders that will give you an even finer grind.
Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder Review: Features
- 8.8 oz bean container and 4 oz ground coffee container
- 16 different grind settings including ultra fine for Turkish and coarse for French Press. Of course, it also covers everything in between.
- Gear reduction motor grinds slowly to reduce noise
Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder Review: Performance
Make no mistake, this is a commercial-grade grinder that's can easily be adapted for home use. It uses high-quality steel conical burrs. Based on my experiences with its performance, this conical burr grinder is great for a small office and/or home-use. There's a small timer dial you set to determine how long you want the grinder to run for. Obviously, the longer you run the grinder the more fresh grounds you'll have at the end. As expected, this burr grinder delivers a very uniform grind which in turn delivers a very consistent cup of coffee.
I like how small this grinder is. It feels sturdy and solid but doesn't take up much counter top space at all which is an important consideration for most.
Given this grinder's performance and output, I was surprised by how quiet this coffee grinder is. You won't have to worry about waking up your neighbors or your own household for that matter. As an added convenience, I really appreciate how the power cord can be folded up and tucked neatly in the underbelly of the grinder making it even more portable than it already is.
Maintenance-wise, it's very modular design allows you to the upper burr for easy cleaning.
This quality burr coffee grinder won't break the bank while delivering top-notch performance. Priced at around $115, this is in my opinion, the best burr grinder available for home use and small offices. Sure, there are higher-priced options that deliver more features and offer more bells and whistles. But for my personal coffee needs, this Capresso 560 coffee grinder is perfect.
In concluding this Capresso Infinity Burr Grinder review, I can say this is hands-down one of the best burr grinders I've ever used. It's sturdy, powerful, compact, and very attractively price.
