The vast world of coffee is full hidden gems. Here at Best Quality Coffee, we're always on the look out for these rare coffee treasures to share with our audience. Today, we take a look at Camano Island Coffee Roasters, a company founded 2000 and focused on not only producing quality coffee but initiating generational-change for the farmers that grow it. We reached out to them to see if they'd be interested in having us do an unbiased Camano Island Coffee review in exchange for their coffee.
Before getting right into the coffee portion of this review, I think it'd be helpful to offer a brief background about the company's offerings. Camano Island Coffee sources only USDA-certified organic, shade-grown coffees that represent the top 1% of all available beans on the market. For those who may not know, shade-grown coffee is coffee grown under a natural canopy of a variety of trees as opposed to a fully sun-exposed field. The yield of a shade-grown coffee plant will typically produce a higher quality bean and ultimately, a better brew. In a world where the term “high-quality” is used loosely, it's nice to know Camano Island Coffee is the type of company to actual back up their claims.
This Camano Island Coffee review was conducted by one of our resident Best Quality coffee reviewers: Roy S. As is the case with any coffee review, we acknowledge that taste is highly subjective. What's considered too strong for one coffee lover may conversely be seen as too weak for another. Having said that, we're pleased to present the following review.
Camano Island Coffee Review: Papua New Guinea (Medium Roast)
– By TRS Montana.
There is a lot to love about Camano Island Coffee Roasters (CICR). What is obvious when you open the first flap of the box the coffee comes in is their commitment to a vision larger than just making great coffee. Included in the informational pamphlets provided is a description of the non-profits that Camano Island works with to support sustainable and fair production. As Simon Sinek says, successful companies are not about the ‘what’, but about the ‘why’; CICR definitely has their ‘why’ nailed down.
Now, on to the coffee. I was sent the Papua New Guinea; a medium roast that is touted as CICR’s most popular. This puppy is a heavy hitter right out of the gates! I didn’t even have to open the bag to smell the goodness! If cardboard boxes were hot in the interior decorating world, I’d keep the box the coffee was shipped in as an air freshener in the bathroom. Seriously. Upon opening this bag, I was sensationally transported to a state of coffee Nirvana. The experience was reminiscent of watching a morning sunrise around the campfire next to an alpine lake; aromas of smoke entangled in wisps of fog, clinging to a slight essence of glacier lilies just in bloom. Add in a scruffy lumberjack flipping the fluffiest chocolate chip pancakes and you’re there.
Even though this roast is labeled as medium, its bold, nutty flavor pushed it toward the darker side in my opinion. It has earthy notes of smoky, dark chocolate with undertones of crisply toasted marshmallow. The flavor starts off mildly sweet and finishes with a lingering bitterness which is suitable for those who favor a sharpness in their coffee. The freshness of the beans is evident in the residual, almost sticky, aftertaste that hangs in your mouth after each sip. Frankly, the sheer intensity of the aftertaste left me longing for a splash of cream. This is certainly bolder than your average medium roast. If you like a bold, darker coffee that will push you into the realm of olfactory enlightenment while still allowing you to savor distinct flavor notes, this one’s for you!
In closing out this Camano Island Coffee review, it's worth noting that a major part of the company's push for lasting change for its farmers is tied to their Coffee Lovers Club subscription. 2% of all memberships go back to the farmers. One thing I particularly appreciate about their coffee subscription is that they offer a free pound of coffee to try for new members. In my opinion, such a gesture speaks volumes and reflects the true confidence they have in their product. Members have access to a variety of 20 different coffees which all meet the company's exceptionally high criteria for sourcing beans.
Camano Island Coffee Roasters also offers their organic coffee in a convenient K-cup and coffee pod delivery form. One notable trait about Camano Island Coffee pods is that they contain 50% more coffee than your average K-Cup.
