Last week I received a small sample package of fresh roasted whole beans from Caffeic Coffee. Caffeic coffee is a relatively new startup located in my home state of Montana. While I’d heard the name tossed around in various coffee conversations among friends, I just hadn’t had the opportunity to try any of their offerings until now. My first experience with this coffee brand involved their single origin whole bean from Indonesia, specifically the island of Java.
I'm the type that believes the most helpful coffee reviews are the ones that offer some context. A few years ago, I discovered single origin coffees and began to realize they often represent a distinct quality or class of coffee. Single origin coffees, as their name implies, come from a single source and offer a pure unadulterated tasting experience. In other words, what you get is the bean in all of its purity which includes any unintended variances in the growing sequence. Blended coffees, on the other hand, typically combine the positive attributes of a variety of beans to offset any unpleasantries. I share in the experience of most coffee lovers when I say that single origin beans are above and beyond standard coffee.
Caffeic Coffee primarily offers a variety of single origin whole beans. They also offer a few blends and even a decaffeinated roast. The packaging is simple and elegant, but effective in that it offers a lot of info in a straightforward, compact way. From reading a single label, I learned everything that mattered most to me: brief tasting notes, country of origin and recommended brewing methods. It's classy and simple. For those looking for a motivational treat, be sure to check the very bottom of the package.
As a coffee lover, I prefer darker roasts and so was excited to try this ‘full-bodied’ coffee. The beans were petite with swirls of milk to dark chocolate color. They were dry with no visible oiliness, and the raw taste was strong, but not bitter.
Day 1 – Caffeic Coffee Review Indonesian Roast
For this Caffeic Coffee review, I decided not to wait until the next morning to try this coffee but instead chose to enjoy an ‘espresso' night cap using my Moka Pot. Moka Pots are an effective way to get full-flavored espresso without spending an arm and a leg on a high-end espresso machine. I ground some beans to a medium fine grind and commenced with the brewing process. The beans ground easily and released a fantastic aroma. It was notably sweet but had a distinct punch that I could best describe as zesty. The finished cup was full of flavor, almost like a semi-sweet chocolate used for baking. I could taste the cocoa notes that finished with a slight bitterness. I enjoyed the light feel in the mouth, which for me allowed the rich brew to remain smooth with a very subtle aftertaste.
Day 2 – Caffeic Coffee Review Indonesian Roast
The next morning I ground my remaining Caffeic Coffee beans and brewed a full pot with my drip brewer. I recognize that time and place can sometimes affect the coffee-drinking experience. I’ve sat thousands of times in my favorite chair at sunrise sipping fresh-brewed coffee. There was something about this coffee on that morning however. I experienced a flavor explosion or wake up call. Really! There's no other way to explain it. The first sip was teeming with flavors of roasted cedar. I then swallowed flavors of chocolate currents and pecans. The flavors were insanely distinct yet amazingly complementary. Every sip offered a rich and ample taste that was anything but fleeting or even vaguely faint. It's worth mentioning that I wasn’t trying or looking to taste these things. They were just there in the fullness of the experience and now I'm just speaking out on behalf of my taste buds.
Without exaggerating, this was perhaps the finest coffee I have ever tasted. Not because the flavors appealed to my individual pallet, but because the flavors were so apparent, rolling one after another through two full cups. Going back to the package, the tasting notes were true in every sense of the word. The ‘sweet…spicy notes' were abundant and although I tasted them in my own way, this showed me their tasting notes were real and not just advertising fluff.
I could continue trying to describe the flavors I tasted within my cup of Caffeic Coffee, but I don’t want anyone to think I am reaching for something that's not quite there. I was there, in my same chair at sunrise. Yet, this time was different, in a grand way. This coffee, ground the same, dripped the same, drank the same, was anything but common. So I will close this Caffeic Coffee review by leaving you with this:
As I sit here drinking my coffee and enjoying my view, I'm reminded of a shared connection between this beautiful sunrise and this cup of brew. In the same way a stunning sunrise is often viewed as a harbinger of good things to come, so too does a cup of Caffeic Coffee signal an impending coffee experience that's supremely enjoyable and exquisite beyond measure. Take from that what you will.
