We recently came across a coffee company named Amor Perfecto. While you can't judge a coffee company by its name alone, we admit the brand itself already sounds like good coffee. The company was generous enough to send us some bags of their finest brews for a detailed and brutally honest Amor Perfecto review.
It’s sometimes interesting to see how we as coffee lovers perceive quality. Sometimes we think the oldest brands are the best simply because they've been around for so long. Other times we assume it’s the new innovative company that's likely to produce the highest quality product. Even where a product is made seems to be enough for some. Either way, I think all coffee lovers can agree that attention to detail, using the best ingredients, and strict focus on the development process are the foundational traits that precede quality.
If you've thought of coffee along these lines, then the coffee from Amor Perfecto is the very definition of quality.
About Amora Perfecto Coffee
Before jumping right into this Amor Perfecto review, a few words need to be said about the company's background. Luis Fernado founded Amor Perfecto with quality above all else in mind. Fernado has worked in nearly every facet of the Colombian coffee industry, and this fact is ultimately reflected in the coffee he makes. He has combined that experience with a raging passion for high-end, fresh, wonderfully flavored coffee to create a market where the best Colombian coffee is available to the world.
Amor Perfecto is unique in that it represents the finest in coffee growers, agricultural technology companies, master roasters, baristas, packagers, chefs and coffee aficionados in Colombia. It is the epitome of detail, using the best materials and tech, and a steadfast focus on freshness and quality.
Amor Perfecto Review: A Closer Look
Having said this and tried their coffee, I really think Amor Perfecto Coffee may have produced the best coffee I've ever had. And considering how many incredible coffees I've drunk over the years, that's saying a lot.
Read on about my detailed experience with Frida Kahlo by Luisa Gauragna and Narino Single Origin.
I’ll be honest. I’ve tasted coffees from two different companies before that taste exactly the same, especially within the dark roast variety. We coffee lovers know that it's easier to hide a brew's imperfections with dark roasts. In full disclosure, I used to prefer dark roasts. However, I’ve come to realize I can taste more complexity in the medium or even light roast varieties.
Amor Perfecto's Frida Kahlo is an excellent example of this.
Amor Perfecto Frida Kahlo by Luisa Gauragna
Frida Kahlo doesn’t list the roast level so to speak on the packaging. But you can immediately tell by looking at the beans. They are petite, milk chocolate brown and absent of any visible oil. The flavor is very distinct from any other coffee I have had and this specific roasting profile allows the natural flavors of the beans to fully express themselves. Truly. It is a fantastic coffee and as I have enjoyed every single sip I’ve taken.
Gauragna has been working to evolve her coffees and it is apparent from the Frida Kahlo she has an elite level of knowledge and skill to farm these beans in such a manner. The flavor seems intentional and the result of a committed excellence. A closer look shows how Guaragna only uses about 20 acres of her 50 acre farm to grow a special variety of coffee plants. The remaining acreage is part of a closed preserve, which provides a naturally fresh water source. There are some other amazing expertise within Guaragna’s processes and you will taste and savor every bit of that in each sip.
Amor Perfecto Narino
The Narino medium roast may hold a close second to the Frida Kahlo for me. It represents another amazing Colombian product. The flavor is mild where you almost have to close your eyes to decide on the various subtleties that seem to flow through the mouth and nose. Narino is a specific growing region in Colombia. The combination of equator influenced temperature swings and volcanic soils allow the small-scale (around 2 acre) farms to focus on quality from start to finish. The coffee is sweet at just the right amount. It gives you a combination of fruit and cream. When it comes to these types of flavors, it's all about balance. And with that said, this brew is perfectly balanced. The Narino is supposed to be Amor Perfecto’s all around variety. Everything about it is anything but average though. I would be in coffee heaven if Narino was brewed every morning in the office break room.
Additional Amor Perfecto Coffees
I also sampled a couple of other varieties from Amor Perfecto. The Elias Roa medium roast was an excellent example of a bolder, chocolaty coffee. It has a specific flavor that was definitely more vigorous or full-bodied. I would drink this in the morning, but also great with a little splash of almond milk any time of the day. Interestingly, Don Elias has been focused on growing coffee, such as the Elias Roa, for the preferences of those living in Nordic countries.
The Luz Edy Gomez coffee bean is grown on a 5 acre farm in a very remote part of Colombia. Luz Edy and her husband have been working with Amor Perfecto for the past five years in an effort to produce something special. The flavor combination in this variety is just that. I will admit I am quite taken with the Frida Kahlo coffee, but this coffee hits my personal palette in a particular way. For me it is the perfect combination of citrus and sweetness. The aroma is mild, but the flavor is extraordinary.
These four coffees, all medium roasts, represent some of the most distinct and satisfying flavors I have ever had. It makes me wonder where dark roasts come into play for me going forward.
In closing this Amor Perfecto review, I recognize now that Amor Perfecto is likely producing some of the best coffee the world over. Perhaps it's because Amor Perfecto is a conglomerate, so to speak, of experts working through and with each other under the knowing hand of Luis Fernado. For example, Amor Perfecto touts freshness just like most other specialty coffee suppliers. However, I received the above coffees directly from Colombia less than four days after the beans were roasted. That's a totally new standard for freshness. That is truly amazing and it represents just a part of an entire process focused on true quality….in EVERY sense of the word.
If you are a fan of Colombian coffee in any way, you must get your hands on these exquisite brews from Amor Perfecto. If you're not a fan of Colombian Coffee, you'll likely become one after your first sip.
